How OneDrive works
OneDrive stores your files online. When you sign in on a computer, a OneDrive folder syncs with the cloud, so changes made on one device appear on the others. You can also open files in a web browser.
Set up sync
- Sign in to OneDrive on your computer with your Microsoft account.
- Follow the setup prompts and choose the folders to sync.
- Wait for the cloud icon to show that files are synced.
Share files
Right-click a file or folder and choose Share. You can invite specific people, or create a link. Check the permission setting before you send it: View lets people read the file, and Edit lets them change it.
Restore earlier versions
For a file you have changed, right-click it in the browser and look for Version history. You can open an earlier version and restore it. Version history is available for many file types, but not all.
Recover deleted files
Deleted files go to the Recycle bin in OneDrive. Open the Recycle bin from the OneDrive website to restore them. Items are kept for a limited time, so act quickly if you need a file back.
Common problems
Sync is paused or shows an error
Check the OneDrive icon in the notification area. Pause and resume sync, check your internet connection, and make sure you have enough free storage.
I am out of storage
Delete unneeded files, empty the Recycle bin, or review your storage plan under your account page.
A file name is rejected
OneDrive does not allow certain characters in file names, such as the asterisk and question mark. Rename the file and try again.
